Significance of Deepavali

Deepavali is a festival of lights that is celebrated by Hindus throughout the world. Some people call it as Diwali. However, Deepavali signifies the victory of good over evil. There are several versions of story that became the reason why Deepavali is celebrated. One version is the victory of Rama over Ravana. Rama is a righteous king and Ravana  is a demon king. Ravana abducted Rama's wife Sita. At this time, Rama met Hanuman who helped him in this war. When Rama saved his wife Sita from the clutches of Ravana and kills Ravana, Deepavali was celebrated. Another legend says that Deepavali is celebrated due to victory of Lord Muruga over a demon king called Tarakasuran, a demon which represents evil. Overall Deepavali is celebrated due to victory of good over evil.
