How to write an effective essay?

Writing an essay can be very simple if you know the right technique to apply. Here are some basic guides for essay writing.

Know the topic well

When a topic is given, research about it well. Establish a good understanding about the topic. Do in depth  reading on the topic. Search the internet for information. It will be a good if you can get some journals related to the topic. A simple Google search will fetch you millions of articles on the topic that you are interested on. Read through this articles in order to get the helicopter view about it. Go to the nearest library in town, search for books that might be helpful. As you go read through these articles, books, journals, etc., do take simple notes in your own words that highlights the key points. Note down any important keywords. Place great importance on this research section. Plus, make sure you have a pocket dictionary with you if you come across unfamiliar words.

Mind Mapping

Upon having a helicopter view on the topic of interest, it’s a good practice to draw a mind map. A mind map is where you start to brainstorm your ideas. Brainstorming activity will be extremely effective if it is done in a group. Ideas will only arrive if you had done a good research on it.

Organize

Now rearrange all the ideas that you have brainstormed to a more organized manner. Doing this can be difficult if no proper research done previously. Points should be arranged according to its importance. Arrange the ideas in a flow that captivates the reader when you reading your final masterpiece.

Introduction

Well now you can start writing. Start with a good introduction. Write a helicopter view about the topic. It must be clear and summarizes the your key points without revealing too much details. At the same time, it has to be able to pull the readers’ attention. Most readers look at the introduction and if it is able to impress them, then they will go on reading the next paragraph. If it does not have the oomph factor, they will stop reading at the introduction.

Elaborate Well

When you present you points, do not simply abruptly state it without proper explanation on it. For example, if you are discussing about automobile parts, let us use the engine for this example. Firstly, explain what is an engine. Then move to where it is located in a vehicle. Gradually, explain its purposes and how it differs with others of its kind. Add little history about it such as the founder, country of origin or any historical facts about it. Quote or cite from the sources that you have researched earlier, make it more informative. State the names of the people who said it. This is also shows the writer has done his homework well. You may criticize the author or the person that gave such opinion, have enough facts to support you. Moving on, start explaining the current engine technology. Write about the changes, benefits, price, size etc. in comparison with the olden engines. Then, talk about the future of it. What do you anticipate an engine would be in ten years down the line? And that would be the concluding lines of that paragraph. Every paragraph has to have a conclusion in it. It develops coherence while reading lengthy essays.

Length

Write as many points that you think relevant to the topic. There is no limit of words. But that applies for writers that write for non-examination purposes. Students must adhere to the limit that is stated in their question paper. However, the techniques explained above can be applied by students too.

Conclusion

A good conclusion will be the one that summarizes the entire essay. It has to be concise and precise which gives the reader a chance to get the jist of the essay. Basically, you have got to answer the question : What did you actually wrote? In addition to that, emphasize your strongest point. You can also give an inspirational view which is very good for readers. It gives them a satisfying feeling. Yes, that’s the keyword : Satisfy. Mesmerize them with your astounding suggestions. It would not be a bad idea if you want to add a poem in the ending.
